Summer Bites Worth Making with Homemade Feta
by Paula Butler
5 easy appetizers · Everyday ingredients · Ready in 20 minutes or less
You made your own feta — that bright, briny, crumbly treasure. Now let's make the most of it. These five appetizers are simple enough for a weeknight and impressive enough for a backyard gathering. No fancy equipment, no hard-to-find ingredients. Just good cheese doing what it does best.
One of the great joys of making cheese at home is discovering how transformative even a small amount can be. Homemade feta carries a freshness you simply can't buy off a shelf — a little tangier, a little creamier, and unmistakably yours. These recipes are built around that quality, letting the feta lead while everyday summer produce does the rest.
Recipe 01 — Watermelon & Feta Skewers
The classic summer combination, no cooking required
Prep: 10 minutes | Serves: 6–8 | No cook
Ingredients
- Half a small seedless watermelon, cubed into 1-inch pieces
- 6 oz homemade feta, cut into similar-sized cubes
- Fresh mint leaves
- Olive oil and a pinch of flaky salt
- Optional: a drizzle of honey or balsamic glaze
How to Make It
- Thread watermelon, feta, and a folded mint leaf onto small skewers or toothpicks.
- Arrange on a plate and drizzle with olive oil.
- Finish with flaky salt and honey if you like a sweet contrast.
Tip: Make these up to an hour ahead and keep refrigerated. The feta holds its shape beautifully and actually absorbs the watermelon's sweetness as it sits.
Recipe 02 — Cucumber Rounds with Whipped Feta & Dill
Cool, creamy, and ready in minutes
Prep: 15 minutes | Serves: 8–10 | No cook
Ingredients
- 2 large cucumbers, sliced into ½-inch rounds
- 6 oz homemade feta, crumbled
- 3 tbsp cream cheese or plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Fresh dill, lemon zest, black pepper
How to Make It
- In a food processor (or with a fork), blend feta, cream cheese, and olive oil until smooth and fluffy. Season with lemon zest and pepper.
- Spoon or pipe the whipped feta onto each cucumber round.
- Top with a small sprig of fresh dill and serve cold.
Tip: The whipped feta keeps in the fridge for up to 3 days. It's also wonderful spread on crusty bread or crackers.
Recipe 03 — Tomato & Feta Bruschetta
Ripe summer tomatoes meet tangy cheese on toasted bread
Prep: 20 minutes | Serves: 6–8 | Quick broil
Ingredients
- 1 baguette or rustic loaf, sliced and toasted
- 2 cups ripe cherry tomatoes, halved
- 4 oz homemade feta, crumbled
- 2 cloves garlic, halved (for rubbing)
- Fresh basil, olive oil, salt, and pepper
How to Make It
- Toss tomatoes with a pinch of salt and let them sit 10 minutes to release their juices.
- Toast bread slices under the broiler until golden, then rub each slice with the cut side of a garlic clove.
- Spoon tomatoes over the toast, top with crumbled feta, torn basil, and a drizzle of olive oil.
Tip: The saltiness of your homemade feta does double duty here — taste before adding extra salt to the tomatoes.
Recipe 04 — Marinated Feta in Olive Oil
A jar of this in the fridge is a gift to future you
Prep: 10 min + chill | Serves: many | No cook
Ingredients
- 8 oz homemade feta, cut into ½-inch cubes
- 1 cup good-quality olive oil
- 1 tsp dried oregano, ½ tsp red pepper flakes
- 2 sprigs fresh rosemary or thyme
- 1 tsp whole black peppercorns, 2 garlic cloves (lightly crushed)
How to Make It
- Layer feta cubes, herbs, garlic, and spices in a clean glass jar.
- Pour olive oil over everything until fully submerged.
- Seal and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Bring to room temperature before serving. Serve with crusty bread, crackers, or olives.
Tip: The infused olive oil left behind is incredible for dipping bread or drizzling over roasted vegetables. Don't waste a drop.
Recipe 05 — Feta & Roasted Red Pepper Crostini
Smoky, salty, a little sweet — crowd-pleaser every time
Prep: 20 minutes | Serves: 8–10 | Quick broil
Ingredients
- 1 baguette, sliced thin and toasted
- 1 jar roasted red peppers, drained and patted dry
- 5 oz homemade feta, crumbled
- 2 tbsp olive oil, fresh parsley, black pepper
- Optional: a small drizzle of hot honey
How to Make It
- Lay a strip or two of roasted red pepper on each toasted crostini.
- Top generously with crumbled feta.
- Drizzle with olive oil, scatter fresh parsley, and finish with cracked pepper or hot honey.
Tip: Use jarred roasted peppers for ease, or char your own fresh bell peppers directly over a gas flame for deeper, smokier flavor.
The best part about all five of these recipes? They scale easily. Double the watermelon skewers for a bigger crowd, or keep a jar of marinated feta in your fridge all season as a ready-made appetizer for any drop-in guests. Your homemade cheese deserves to be shown off — and these bites make that effortless.
